TATTOO HEALING
OVERVIEW

The healing time varies between individuals and the size/style of tattoo but, in general, it takes about 2–3 weeks for tattoos to fully heal on the surface of the skin.

The three main stages of the healing process are:

Inflammation
Inflammation is the first stage of the natural healing process. It is normal for the tattooed area to be red, tender, swollen and/or “weepy” in the first couple of days after getting tattooed (full color tattoos tend to be extra weepy!)

Peeling
In a few days, your skin will begin to repair itself by shedding the dead skin (scabbing/peeling). This stage of healing can get itchy but don’t scratch or pick at your tattoo! By this point, you should not be experiencing persistent redness, swelling, pain, heat and/or oozing (these are potential signs of infection).

“Onion Skin”
After the skin regenerates, the new skin will appear shiny and wrinkly (like onion skin). The “onion skin” can make your tattoo appear cloudy but it generally settles in a few weeks and can be sped up by moisturizing regularly.

To maintain the vibrancy and longevity of your tattoos after they’ve fully healed on the surface: moisturize regularly, exfoliate occasionally and always wear sunscreen when outside for extended periods of time (regardless of your skin tone)—tattoo pigment is not lightfast and will fade over time if not protected from sun exposure!
